The tourists looking for an exciting getaway must take a journey through the thrilling terrains of the great Nordic country of Finland. Finland is located in northern area of Europe and is famed for being a country of thousands of islands and lakes. The Finnish landscape has large forest cover of the coniferous taiga type and its surface area is still in a growing stage. The rich flora and fauna of Finland is quite extensive and diverse. Finland is characterized by extreme weather and contrasting seasons. The tourism industry in Finland is thriving due to modernization, globalization, awareness and positive publicity. Most of the areas in Finland are still unexplored and less frequented and these unspoiled regions are a great attraction to the discerning travelers.

The virgin and pristine areas of Finland include as many as 35 national parks. Most of the areas are urbanized and hence have great tourism potential owing to cultural activities and events. The major port and coastal cities of the Baltic region have many commercial cruise plying and they play an important role in the local tourism. These cities include Turku, Helsinki, Tallinn, Travemunde and Stockholm.

Tourism is an all year round activity in Finland, both summer as well as winter tourism are in great demand. In summer, you can attend numerous international festivals of music and dance and markets. You can indulge in several outdoor activities like lake cruises, kayaking, fishing, yachting, golf, and hiking in addition to many more. You may go for the popular sport of bird watching or enjoy the thrills of regulated game hunting for hare, elk and reindeer. In winter, you can take part in Nordic walking, dog sledding or skiing. Finland is considered to be Saint Nicholas or Santa Claus’s home. Lapland is also known as the Land of Northern Lights and Midnight Sun. Lapland’s northern region houses Santa’s Post Office. You can witness the exquisite spectacle of atmospheric fluorescence or Aurora Borealis also in Lapland.

Finland has glorious historical, religious and cultural traditions and the tourists can see these in the different world heritage sites, churches, cathedrals, museums, ancient architectural buildings and structures. Old Rauma is one such tourist attraction; it is one of the world heritage sites and Finland’s oldest harbour. It has well preserved impressive buildings of the ancient era and these are housed even today by the expert craftsmen like carpenters, goldsmiths and lace makers.

You can visit the Rauma Museum in the town hall and the Franciscan Holy Cross Church of 15th century. The 18th century of Island Fortress of Suomennlina is a site worth visiting and it represents the typical military architecture of European type. You can go on a sightseeing trip of the numerous galleries and museums along with visiting the different cafes and restaurants. Another must see is the St. Olaf’s Castle at Olavlinna, an ancient castle with magnificent structure. You can stroll on the King’s Road and take a trip down the memory lane while seeing the castles, manors and cottages. The town of Turku is an interesting medieval town with castles and Viking Museum. The other places of tourist interest include Arktikum Science Museum, Retretti Art Centre and Aland Islands in addition to many more.
