Nicaragua is a captivating tourist destination in Central America. The country of Nicaragua has coastlines both on the eastern and western side, of the Caribbean Sea and North Pacific Ocean respectively. It is bordered by Costa Rica on the south eastern side and Honduras on the northwestern side. Nicaragua is Central America’s largest country and is home to Central America’s biggest freshwater body, Cocibolca or Lago de Nicaragua. Earlier, Nicaragua was considered to be unsafe because of insurgency and civil war. Now the picture is changed, and it has become quite safe for tourists.

Some areas of Nicaragua still lack tourist facilities. The areas of Nicaragua that are well developed and have the tourist infrastructure are still untouched and have that appeal of being unique and off the beaten path. You will be completely enraptured by these lovely places in Nicaragua. Nicaragua comprises of three striking ecological zones- Pacific, Atlantic and Central, and has varied geography of volcanoes, beaches, tropical forests and agricultural land. Nicaragua enjoys tropical climate in the lowlands and cooler climate in highlands. The Pacific lowlands have extremely hot weather in the dry months. The Atlantic Coast is occasionally hit by hurricanes in every season.

You can reach Nicaragua by air at the international airport of its capital city, Managua. Managua has flights from Miami, Atlanta and Houston and is serviced by Delta, American Airlines and Spirit Airlines. You can get to Nicaragua by car, international buses and boats as well. Nicaragua can be traveled internally by way of bus, domestic flights, taxis and boats. Hitch hiking is also a comfortable and cheap mode of transport within Nicaragua.

The tourist attractions of Nicaragua include Isabella Mountains, Lake Nicaragua, Ometepe Island, Lake Managua, Mornotombo Volcano, River San Juan, River Rio Grande, Corn Islands, Solentiname Islands, Laguna de Apoyo, Volcan Masaya, Canyon de Somoto, Selva Negra and El Castillo. You can visit the Cathedral and National Palace at Managua and marvel at the fantastic colonial architecture. You will also enjoy the various interesting museums at Managua and the most notable one is the Las Huellas de Acahualinca, which houses the site of 9,000 year old footprints. Managua has many lagoons formed from the volcanic craters. It is also home to picnicking facilities and water sports activities of boating and fishing. The most popular lagoon is Laguna de Xiola. You can enjoy a canopy tour above the Tiscapa Lagoon.

Leon is the intellectual nerve center of Nicaragua with the largest cathedral of Central America, religious colleges and university. Granada is located at the base of the Mombacho Volcano and has well preserved buildings that are representative of Castilian traditions. The tourists must make trips to the magnificent beaches of Masachapa and Pochomil. Bluefields is an important port worth visiting. Other interesting places to visit on the Pacific Coast are the fine beaches of Marsella, El Coco, Ocotal and San Juan del Sur in addition to many more. Santa Lucia has beautiful forests and wonderful archaeological sites of Cerro Santo Domingo, Las Mascaras and Paso Las Lajas. Santa Lucia has a great hiking trail and all adventure enthusiasts will have a lifetime experience.
