Belarus is officially known as Republic of Belarus. Belarus is a landlocked country of Eastern Europe, and is bordered by Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland and Latvia. It was earlier known as Belorussia or White Russia and acquired the name of Belarus, after it gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Belarus is a nation with rich and glorious cultural heritage, unparalleled natural beauty and many more enchanting tourist attractions. One of the major rivers of Belarus is Dnieper. Minsk is the capital city of Belarus and was a prosperous city in the ancient times. It was damaged badly during the WW II and only a few of the 17th century buildings exist presently. Modern Minsk city is designed symmetrically with widespread embankments that flank the Svisloch River. Minsk is home to many museums like the National Arts Museum, National Museum of Belarusian History and culture, Museum of Old Belarusian Culture and Museum of History of the Great Patriotic War. The cultural scene in Minsk is very lively and diverse in the form of Belarusian Ballet and other museums dealing with works of Belarusian writers etc.

The tourist must visit Troitskoye Predmestye suburb to get an insight of how Minsk looked in older times. You are able to see excellent Baroque type of architecture in the Cathedral of Holy Spirit, Maryinski Cathedral and the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul. The 14th century castle of Lida at Novogrudok is another interesting tourist sight. Raubichi village is one more place of tourist interest and houses an excellent ethnographic museum, located in a disused church. The tourist must also see the picturesque Minsk Lake, which has many islets and is encircled by dense pine forests.

Ozerto is home to the Museum of Folk Architecture and has exhibits of the original remnants of the hundred year old buildings from various regions of Belarus. The Dudutki Museum of Material Culture is Belarus’s only private museum showcasing traditional lifestyles and crafts. The entire landscape of Belarus is dominated by the Russian Orthodox churches with onion shaped domes. The Khatyn Memorial commemorates the destruction done during WW II by the German army.
