Lanzarote is rated as one of the five topmost holiday destinations for UK in the year 2008. The guests are assured of an excellent relaxed getaway on this tranquil island. This is not your typical holiday destination of a busy nightlife and extravagant lifestyle. However, the beautiful surroundings make up for them in the form of dazzling beaches, crystal clear waters and the lagoons. Lanzarote forms a part of the Canary Islands of Spain. It is situated at Canary Islands’ extreme northeastern tip. It is interesting to note that this island has a volcanic origin.

Arrecife is the capital city of Lanzarote Island. The economy of this island is completely dependent on tourism. The inhabitants of Lanzarote speak Castilian Spanish with a distinctive accent of the Canary Islands. The people in the tourism industry have a working knowledge of English. Majority of the restaurants provide menus in Spanish, German and English. Arrecife has an airport that acts as a gateway to Lanzarote. There are a number of charter flights from Northern Europe and the airport is also serviced by scheduled flights from Spanish mainland, other islands of the Canary Islands, Gatwick in London and other international places.

Taxi and bus services prove to be economical for getting around the island. Car hiring is also a good and cheap option for exploring the remote areas of Lanzarote. Public transport is not that well developed and can best be avoided. A visit to Timanfaya National Park is a must. It is a lovely volcanic landscape that remains unchanged since 1730, the time of its eruption and covers nearly a quarter area of the total island surface. Mountains of Fire or Montanas del Fuego are situated in the area of the national park. It has a restaurant, bar and shop at Islote de Hilario. There is an admission fee for this area and it is inclusive of a guided bus tour. You can get breathtaking views of the park from here and enjoy barbecued meat that is roasted by the isolte’s underground heat.

Other tourist attractions include Timanfaya National Park Visitors’ Centre, Tinajo, Mancha Blanca, Jameos Del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, Mirador del Rio, Jardin de Cactus, Fundacion Cesar Manrique, Casa Monumento al Campesino, Agricola Museum and Whales and Dolphins Museum. You have a free admission to Timanfaya National Park Visitors’ Centre, where you will get to see audio visual presentations and displays that explain the island’s origins, present day volcanic activity, park’s history and information of the plant and animal life.

Jameos Del Agua is a magnificent place with a restaurant, bar, concert hall and swimming pool constructed in a jameo, a volcanic formation. You can see many natural wonders at Cueva de los Verdes. All the places of tourist interest have excellent restaurants and dining facilities. You can enjoy many worth while itineraries that will take you along the west coast, restaurants and beaches of black sand. The adventure enthusiasts can enjoy water based sports like surfing, canoeing, windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkeling. Tasty local cuisine can be enjoyed at many restaurants along with seafood specialties.
