Malaga is the capital city of Costa del Sol. It contains the world-renowned Picasso Museum. Since its inauguration in 2003, there have been a number of tourists getting attracted to this place, to have a look at this historic city. It also takes pride in calling itself the birth-place of Picasso, the world renowned painter.
Malaga-The Cultural Capital of Europe
The City Council of Malaga is trying to achieve the status of the ‘Cultural Capital of Europe’ since 2004. It has presented a tender to the Union of Europe requesting it thereby. Efforts are being made on a war footing to get this done.
Climate
The ‘Malaga Mountains’ act as the ideal barrier to prevent cold winds from entering the city. The ‘Mediterranean Coastline’ causes humidity in Malaga. July-August is the summer months, and December-February is the winter months in Malaga. It drizzles in winter.
History
Malaga is home to enormous historic monuments like Baroque Cathedral, better known as ‘La Manquita’ meaning ‘One Armed Woman’. It refers to its asymmetrical appearance owing to the ‘Missing East Bell Tower’. There is a Parador (hotel) over the city atop a hill, which is historically important. It was a Moorish fortress before. A bird eye view of the entire city can be observed from here. The ‘Spanish Civil War’ led to the destruction of the much ancient architecture during the 11th century.
Festivities, shopping and other things worth doing
Malaga is a grand shopping centre. The ‘Main Street’ is at right angles to the Almeda, and begins at the Plaza Marina, adjoining the port. In 2002, Calle Marques de Larios was made available for pedestrians. This area has various boutiques, cafes, and designer cafes. Plaza de la Constitucion is the centre of attraction all the year through, when different religious, traditional, and cultural events are organized. It is worth visiting during Christmas. Larios’s north gate has a five star hotel, which is frequently visited by Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffiths, his wife. It also contains indoor shopping malls (commercial).The festivals celebrated here include ‘The International Jazz Festival’ (in the first week of November) and the Film Festival (in the first week of March).The Cervantes Theatre is well known.
Food joints in Malaga
Mention a European cuisine, and its available right there. There is a wide variety of fish dishes in Malaga. The Mediterranean diet includes some very healthy stuff, especially in the Malaga beach bar, better known as Chiringuito and the contemporary espeto dishes prepared on skewer.
Sightseeing
The sightseeing costs 15 euros/adult. The official tourist bus takes one to Jarines de la Concepcion; the famous Botanical garden on Malaga’s outskirts. It also leads one to the Malagueta Beach, the Gibralfaro Castle, the BullRing, and the port. The city park stands along the ‘Paseo del Parque’. It was formed in the 19th century, making a proper usage of land domesticated from sea.
