Researching your destination thoroughly is of course mandatory. Focus on Unusual Details
Certain local traditions or tidbits can be an interesting point to start for building up your story on the destination. You should keep looking for interesting facts and detailing which other people have missed. You should look for something which makes the place truly unique and which would attract readers. Never miss out any details even if it is something funny, weird or out rightly disgusting.
Research your Market
If you are writing for a travel blog or friends then you probably know your audience. However, if you are writing for newspapers, magazines or a website then make sure that you know the reading audience. For instance, if the reader is young and adventurous then you can highlight on the adventure activities during the tour, but is the readers are family members of retirees then just focus on family spots or the places where the old and children could enjoy. Therefore, knowing your target audience is very important before you start your travel writing.
