Despite the credit crunch and the current weakened state of the pound against the euro millions of British holidaymakers will still be jetting off for a break this Easter. And Spain still features as one of the most popular destinations – with islands such as the Canaries and Balearics gearing up to welcome tourists from across the UK.
Lanzarote and the Canary Islands remain a particularly popular choice thanks to the fact that they enjoy significantly warmer weather at this time of year than any other Spanish sunspot. As a result of their location south of the Iberian Peninsula off the coast of Saharan Africa. On a similar line of latitude to parts of Mexico and Florida – yet still only four hours flying time from all UK airports.
Lanzarote is the most easterly of the Canary Islands – and is often regarded as a much quieter alternative to Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Boasting a unique volcanic scenery and strong cultural heritage – forged by the island born artist Cesar Manrique. Who did much to ensure that Lanzarote wasn’t submerged beneath a tide of package tourism back in the 1970´s.
Places To Stay in Lanzarote
Lanzarote has three main holiday resorts – Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. Although this is slowly becoming three and a half in truth, thanks to the emergence of the marina at Puerto Calero as a popular destination.
Playa Blanca boasts the best selection of Lanzarote hotels. As a number of new four and five star establishments have been created along the shoreline over the last decade.
Puerto del Carmen is the number on choice for apartments in Lanzarote. As the islands most popular resort has the highest concentration of complexes of any resort.
Rural tourism is also starting to gain ground. As regular visitors to the island return again and again, keen to engage with the real Lanzarote away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts. As a result there’s now a growing crop of rural hotels and fincas catering to this demand. Offering stylish and modern accommodation in character properties in the countryside.
Sightseeing in Lanzarote
Lanzarote is a small island – measuring just 58km by 38km. But it offers a large amount of things to do and see. Thanks to a combination of great natural attractions alongside some unique man made creations.
The most popular tourist spot on the island is the Timanfaya Volcano Park. Where the raw, jagged terrain attracts close to one million visitors every year.
Whilst elsewhere on the island Cesar Manrique successfully fused Lanzarote´s volcanic scenery with his own creative aesthetic.
Resulting in some breathtaking tourist attractions such as LagOmar – the former home of film star Omar Sharif built into the side of a former quarry. Now home to one of the most upmarket restaurants in Lanzarote.
