More than 160 km of manicured pistes are accessible by at least 60 lifts from seven nearby resorts in the Kitzbuhel ski area.  If you’re really adventurous, there are a number of off-piste trails including a ‘ski safari’ route that runs for 35 km and requires a whole day.

This one is not for the faint-hearted but it’s an unforgettable experience if you are up to the challenge.  Kitzbuhel is also known for its nightlife, so bring your party clothes and check out some of the four discotheques and more than 40 bars.  You may want to try a cuppa mixed with rum or schnapps, called a Jagertee.

The ski resort at Soll is often advertised as a ‘cheap ski holiday’ destination, and indeed there are some excellent deals to be had, but don’t underestimate the other advantages.

Soll is part of the Ski Welt Wilder – Kaiser Brixental area, which is the largest lift-linked area in the country.

The vast investment in snowmaking equipment almost guarantees that conditions are ideal, both for beginners and for the most advanced and daring of the skiing elite,  in fact the area’s motto is “the right slope for all inclinations.”

Soll is also very big on snowboarding, and you can take classes in that sport at any of the numerous ski-schools.  At night you can continue skiing or tobogganing on some of the slopes, but when you’ve had enough snow, hit the discos or one of the many fine restaurants in the village.

Though the ‘official’ ski season doesn’t begin until November, now is the time to start making your plans for mountain holidays in Austria.  Of course in the winter months, mountain holidays are almost sure to be ski holidays, but even if you only want to watch,

There are, of course, the usual sightseeing of the Statute of Liberty, Central Park, the ice skating rink at Rockefeller Centre, Times Square, Wall Street, United Nations, the fashionable shops of Fifth Avenue, Broadway theatres, the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Bronx Zoo, and so much more.

For young children there is the Big Apple Circus which is in town in the fall and winter with its circus favourites including clowns and acrobats; also the Disney Store on Fifth Avenue with activities and “the happiest store clerks on earth”. The younger folks would also enjoy the free Sony Wonder Technology Lab with a movie studio, simulators, robot control, and other wonders. Girls enjoy the American Girl Place with each doll coming with its own stories and accessories. Your daughter or grand-daughter can spend time in the doll salon with her new purchase or in the attached cafe. Although located away from the main strip, the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory presents a “fun” time.

For chocolate lovers of all ages there is Max Brenner’s (Chocolate by the Bald Man) on East Broadway between 13th and 14th Street. This unique place grinds its own cacao beans and churns its own chocolate and then offers a mouth-watering menu including chocolate mousse, fruit and marshmallows for dipping in a chocolate fondue, a steamed chocolate pudding with a molten centre of dark chocolate mixed with raspberry sauce, and other decadent items.

Walking food tours are very popular and give you a chance to sample a large variety of local favourite foods while touring neighbourhoods and learning about their history and culture.

Remember seat belts must be worn in the front and the back, the use of mobile phones is prohibited and you will need a map that was drawn after 2004, as the roads were reclassified then.

Cheap car rental Faro is highly recommended as it will give you the flexibility to visit areas off the beaten track, that can`t be visited using local public transport; beautiful sandy beaches and dramatic coastal scenery at Carvoeiro, Alvor, Lagos or Luz near Faro, or delightful architecture in the historical towns of Coimbra, Setubal, Braga and Évora. Its climate is semiarid and it has an approximate area of 55km². The island is closer to the Dominican Republic, but belongs to the Puerto Rican archipelago. On the island there are walks and explorations, some of which have proved several times already to be dangerous due to, mortal-dehydration, disorientation, etc. primarily by the negligence of the visitors. There has been research conducted on the flora and fauna of the island by educational institutions (including the University of Puerto Rico) and state and federal agencies.

Nature reserve

The Island Nature Reserve is located in the Mona Passage, halfway between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, approximately 70km west of the main island. The Mona Island Natural Reserve is the largest MPA comprising of 157,379 ha (38.889 acres) with limits extending 9 nautical miles from its coast and including Monito, a small island 6km northwest of Mona.

Mona’s land area is 5,566 hectares (13.753 acres) and Monito is 14 (34 acres). These islands were derived from the deposition of calcium carbonate on the seafloor and subsequent uplift during the Miocene for 24 – 25 million years. Endemic terrestrial species are found on both islands, including plants, amphibians, reptiles, birds and various marine habitats such as coral reefs, seagrass and submerged vertical-cliff walls.

Mona the name derives from the name of a Taino chief (native Indian) called ‘Amona’ who inhabited the island prior to Spanish colonization. Mona was inhabited by pirates, guano gatherers, fishermen and hunters, among others.

In 1919, Mona Island Forest was declared by the governor, and in 1986 Arthur Yager Mona and Monito was designated as the Natural Reserve of the Mona Island by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) of Puerto Rico. DNER personnel permanently inhabited the island of Mona, while visitors camped under permission.

La Reserva Natural Isla de la Mona is a laboratory for scientific research including archeology, geology, oceanography, management of alien species, and conservation of threatened species (e.g. rock iguanas, turtles, and birds endemic).

There are many different holiday regions here, from Palma the capital and Magaluf in the south-west of the island, to Puerto Pollensa on the north-west coast. Around the island the many beautiful beaches lend themselves well to a variety of activities and the mountains add a wonderful backdrop to many regions as well as offering some interesting walks and wonderful views.

Puerto Pollensa, about an hour and a half’s drive from Palma is surrounded by the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range which gives a lot of shelter to the bay in which its set. One of the area’s most impressive land marks is the Via Crucis which is a steep climb of around 400 steps flanked by cypress trees. When you reach the top there’s a 13th century statue of the Mare de Due del Peu de la Creu (Mother of God at the foot of the Cross), and the views from this plateau are stunning as well.

The bay of Pollensa has a main beach with wonderful shallow waters which makes it very popular with families, and the area has a number of other smaller natural beaches as well allowing those who want a little more seclusion the perfect atmosphere. Through the summer there are lots of bars and pavement cafes open to visitors, and the region has one well established disco called Chivas which has been open since 1969. Many of the hotels however put on entertainments in the evening which are open to anyone who wishes to attend and not just their own patrons.

For people who enjoy walking, there are lots of walks in this area which take you up into the hills where you can enjoy stunning views out over the bay and the surrounding seas, and the flora in the area can be very beautiful as well. Local guides will happily go with you on these walks so you have no need to worry about getting lost either.
