The government asked British nationals not to travel to Bangkok outside of essential trips. The advice came after the army was forced to break up the anti-government ‘Red Shirt’ protestors which paralyzed central Bangkok.
The anti-government demonstrations caused several outbreaks of violence to occur leaving 88 dead and almost 1,900 injured since the beginning of May.
The Foreign Office issued a statement that stated citizens should avoid all but essential travel to the capital, which was a reduction of last week’s statement that no travel to Thailand should be initiated.
The Foreign Office also said that while Bangkok is slowly stabilizing again, it is still an unpredictable situation. It is worth noting that travellers who will be transiting from the Bangkok airport while en route on holiday should not meet with any difficulties.
The Foreign Office advised Britons that may already be in Bangkok to adhere to the midnight to four am curfew. The curfew has been extended for four nights of the week but Britain warned that travel should stay restricted along with travel to the northern Thailand city of Chaing Mai since there is still the risk of violence.
