However, sometime over the course of the seventies, tourism started to creep into the small community and the Island of Crete as villages saw the chance to get European holidaymakers interested in the island.

In particular, they looked at attracting tourists from Ireland and since then the small village has turned into a full resort area that can cater perfectly for couples and families without any problems. The beachfront has a lot to offer, with clear azure seas, pristine sand, and plenty of four and five star hotels to choose from.

Most of the beaches are private for those that stay at the hotel that they sit alongside or are sectioned off and considered private for patrons of the beach bars that sit along the shoreline. It’s not really such a bad way to explore the different stretches of beach however, as each new stop allow you to try the new snacks, cocktails, and signature drinks of the bars.

This may sound a bit expensive until you think about the cost of a sunbed back home, and that with a sunbed you just get a little golden sun replicated whereas for about six euros you can get a drink, snack, and time out on the beach to sunbathe, which is comparably a much better deal.

Spending time at the beaches and the bars is not the only reason to head out to Stalis however, as the area also offers plenty of shopping including some great buys for those interested in jewellery, fashion, and leather. Throughout the town there are also plenty of shopping boutiques where you can pick up odds and ends that are unique to the area, as well as some fashions that you are not likely to find outside of Greece.

In addition, for the night loving crowd, apart of the bars and the restaurants that line the beaches and the city streets there are also a few nightclubs and dance clubs that allow you to get the full holiday experience if you choose to. Plus, as it is only about an hour from the Heraklion, the capital of Crete, you can drive into the city for a bit more fun.

In fact, location is one of the primary reasons for visiting Stalis given the fact that it’s very centrally located on Crete. The city itself is about five minutes away from the larger more cosmopolitan city of Hersonissos and just about a half hour drive away from Knossos Palace.

It is also next door to Malia, where there is a lot more nightlife for those who really want to have a great time of it while on holiday. Plus, the mountains are a short drive away as well so those wishing to see some of nature’s greatest wonders will also not be disappointed.

While the Greek people are known for their love of children and their incredible hospitality, the island of Kefalonia isn’t just for families. Couples in love will enjoy a romantic night out and about on the island. Fancy meals, pubs, bars and other forms of nightlife make it the perfect romantic escape for couples or the perfect night out with friends. If you are staying in any of the Kefalonia villas you will want to take advantage of a night out during your Kefalonia holiday.

The majority of the nightlife in Kefalonia is in the capital city of Argostoli but the major resorts along the beach towns have their own bars and nightlife, as well. In the capital city of Argostoli is a small restaurant on harbor called Ampelaki. Ampelaki offers ocean views and traditional Greek food with an extensive wine list. While you enjoy your dinner and wine, you can watch the sun set over the water and enjoy the quiet ambiance that is part of this romantic dinner during your Kefalonia holiday. If you aren’t ready to head back to your Kefalonia villas after dinner, walk into the Argostoli square to one of the many quaint bars for another drink and a lot more enjoyment.

Right on the beach in Argostoli is a quaint little bar by the name of Stavento. This local bar is open during the day so that tourists and locals can enjoy a drink and the spectacular view of the ocean. During the evening, once the sun has set, the ambiance is apparent, the staff is friendly and accommodating and the view is still spectacular. The drinks are good, too.

From the bar you can head to the square where you can go to any one of the many nightclubs and discos that line the streets. If you prefer, you can indulge yourselves in a bottle of wine while seated outside at one of the many cafes and watch the lively entertainment that happens each night in the square. From children playing to outdoor concerts, the square always has some form of entertainment going on for tourist and locals to enjoy.

If you are heading back to your villa after dinner and decide to stop for a drink and entertainment, the Zanza bar in Poros features live music, entertainment and a full menu of cocktails, beers and wines. In Scala, the bar Zebra features live musicians and bands on a regular basis. You can dance or just sit back and listen to the music.

A romantic, fun evening out in Kefalonia is a great way to enjoy your holiday. A nice dinner with a breathtaking view to a lively bar for drinks and entertainment; it’s a perfect night.

Greece is a gem of the Mediterranean Sea with an incredible appeal to tourists. The country is known throughout the world for its excellent weather, cuisine, beaches and history. If a holiday in the sun comes to mind then it probably will look similar to the beauty that surrounds Greece.

There are a number of ways to spend a summer holiday in Greece but one of the more popular is staying in a luxury villa; one that may overlook the sea or one that is nestled in the centre of an intimate town.

One important reason to stay in a holiday villa is that you can escape the fast paced tourist areas for the majority of your stay. You can arise at the hour you want and have a delicious breakfast on the patio. During the day after a long stroll through town you can return for a dip in your private pool and then enjoy the setting sun that represents the end of another glorious day of your Greek holiday.

There are a number of Greek villas that are available to rent and some of them are not as expensive as the luxury villas so they are more appropriate for the entire family and because they are spacious the kids will have ample room to play. The villa ends up being a home from home and you will not be stuck on the schedules of the hotel restaurants or their menu, you can prepare food for they family that they are accustomed to.

Lagonisi is one place that is ideal for a holiday. South of Athens the town is located equally between the sea and a number of different attractions. The beach is very nice and there are plenty of picturesque vistas to enjoy either from your villa or different areas of the town. There are ample activities to enjoy from scuba diving to helicopter tours to golf. They are all available and easily accessible from your holiday villa.

A short distance away is the Greek Temple of Poseidon along the coast in Cape Sounion. And Athens is very close and a great place to spend a day in the city and visit the Acropolis or the 2000 year old Parthenon. So what more do you need on your holiday than beautiful sun splashed beaches, centuries of history, peace and tranquillity and all just steps from your luxury Greek villa.

Here there is no better way than on two wheels or two feet to enjoy the island. Whether it be by bicycle or your feet you can enjoy many places easily. There are a myriad of walks and trails you can take to see the island with wonderful panoramic views from lookouts.

There are plenty of churches and monasteries your can visit on the island there seems to be at least one in each of the small areas around the island. There are plenty of photo shoot opportunities while you get around the island, either on the beaches, the over looks or the centuries old churches.

The town of Bourtzi has a wonderful area that surrounds the harbor that includes the ruins of an old fortress that dates to the 12th century and a great place to have a picnic or watch the small fishing boats that come and go. If you want to get around quicker but you do not want to rent a car, then the public transportation is reliable and there are regular buses that get you to the popular places all over the island.

The island’s restaurant serve mostly Greek cuisine and there are a lot to choose from and there are also many bars and taverns to enjoy a drink or three. The prices are quite reasonable so they will suit most everyone’s budget.
We all know that Greek food is delicious. Apparently, according to the spokesmen, it is even more enjoyable in Greece amid the sunshine, mild climate, and friendly natives.

Greece has long been an exotic holiday destination and nothing has happened to change that. Its history is long and rich and its beauty renowned. Travelers from around the world treasure the Mediterranean and its beaches, and the government is doing all it can to make Greece even more accessible to international travel than ever before.

So, when might there be a better time to visit Greece? The answer is never. Go now.

A Mediterranean Holiday Cruise

The Mediterranean is a popular holiday cruise destination known for its golden beaches and warm climates. Indeed, a cruise is the best way to explore this majestic region that takes pride in its diverse cultures. Most of the touristy spots in this region are equally as interesting to explore but why not indulge in the tourism wonders that the Balearics, Italian and French Rivieras, and Spanish Costa can offer? On such a cruise, tourists get to savour the different cultures of world-famous cities such as Barcelona, Rome, and Cannes.

In this part of Europe are traditional “old towns” where visitors can enjoy a drink while enjoying the sight of the majestic ancient churches. The laid-back atmosphere in these spots is something most travellers relish.

Mediterranean cuisine is also diverse, with a dash of Greek, Moroccan, and Spanish influence. Cruisers can enjoy many dishes, but they should not leave without trying the Spanish Tapas (small dishes made from meat, vegetables and fish). Since Mediterranean countries are near the sea, fish has always been a staple of many dishes and is considered the “key” to the Mediterranean’s cooking heritage. Fish is cooked in countless ways, including casseroles, pastas, soups, and stews, depending on which country you visit. There are many vegetables and fruits that are grown in the warm Mediterranean climate, and these are a feast for the wandering traveller.

Travellers may also enjoy learning the languages spoken in this region. Although many people speak English in the coastal ports, it is always worth trying to speak the local language. Among the languages spoken in the Mediterranean region are Spanish, Italian, and Greek.

In order for you to experience the Mediterranean, many cruise deals are available at reduced or discounted rates. Plan a booking at least four months prior to departure to get an itinerary or the shore excursions of your choice.

When ‘Mamma Mia! The Movie’, based on the global smash hit Abba musical, hits the silver screen on 10 July, Greece will be the word. Filmed on location at the Pelion Peninsula, overlooking the Pagasitic Gulf, this unspoilt and extraordinarily beautiful region is as yet an Aegean unknown.

Members of the cast, including Meryl Streep, Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan, were inspired by the area’s dramatic dreamscape during filming: dominated by mountains, villages clinging to its verdant slopes, where the waters are wonderfully clear, and its beaches blissful. It’s an area untouched by time, and gratifyingly Greek.

The stars opted for authentic eccentric, serene bohemian on the accommodation front, staying at the rather special Damouchari Hotel, situated in a tiny, car-free hamlet, one of the most beautiful places on the peninsula. Just a short walk from the natural harbour and the white-pebble beach, this bijoux hotel is eclectically decorated and has a freshwater pool and four excellent local tavernas. The owners, Apostolis and Elli Vainopoulos, have created an oasis of lawns and shady trees here between the dazzling blue sea and the white cliffs.

A seven-night stay at the Damouchari Hotel costs from £640 pp (two sharing) in July, including flights (Gatwick) and accommodation with breakfast when booked through Greek Specialist Sunvil

Filming also took place on Skopelos, a beautifully green, wooded island with delightful secluded coves that has retained its Greek flavour. Sunvil Specialist Greece, the UK’s expert operator to the country for 34 years, offers the most comprehensive programme to Skopelos from the UK. A week’s stay at the secluded Stone Cottage near Skopelos Town, costs from £677 pp (two sharing) including return flights (Gatwick) and transfers.

For further information, call Sunvil Specialist Greece on 020 8568 4499 or visit www.sunvil.co.uk.
