For many, your time at university is the three most memorable years of your life and following the conclusion, many are often left at a loose end when it comes to moving on to the next chapter of their life. Many graduates will try their hardest to enter the jobs market and utilise their degree to the best of their ability but the sheer volume of applicants and competition for vacancies in some professions will make this easier said than done.

For those struggling to gain employment and who have a passion for experiencing new things in variety of culture, why not consider a gap year and travel the world. Clear your head, enjoy life and have a serious think about where your passion lies when your travels eventually come to an end.

For those planning to hit the open road and country hop for a few months but have no idea where to go and what to do, listed below are 7 of the best things travellers can experience. A word to the wise though some of these activities require notification/extra cover to your travel insurance provider, you don’t want to be left to count the costs should the worst happen. Specific backpacker or annual travel insurance packages can be purchased which often take into account some of these activities:

Tubing in Vang Vieng, Laos

Vang Vieng is a tiny but important destination in Laos and, while you’re there, you definitely need to go tubing. This is where you get to sit in an inflated inner tube and see some of the amazing sites. There are gorgeous views of the mountains, as well as stops for beer, diving and more. Not to be missed.

Full Moon Party in Thailand

If you head over the Laos border into neighbouring Thailand, you should certainly check out a full moon party. Koh Phangan in south east Thailand is a great place for this and the party takes place every full moon with up to 20,000 people attending each one and you’ll typically find DJs, food, drink and an all-round good time.

Snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef

You have to be careful when it comes to snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef as the coral is particularly delicate and very well protected (and rightly so), but this is definitely one of the best sights in the world and so if you go to Australia, it’s more than worth a visit.

Sky Diving in New Zealand

Once you’re done with the Great Barrier Reef, you could then head over to nearby New Zealand which provides activities for all kinds of thrill seekers. Sky diving is exciting no matter where you do it, but in New Zealand where there are sensational lakes and brilliant views wherever you go, it’s even more special.

Walk the Inca Trail in Machu Pichu

If you’re going backpacking in South America, one of the best things to do is walk the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu. The trail goes through the mountains over a river and, while it takes a few days to complete, it’s certainly worth it and the views are gorgeous.

Watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat

If you want to see an amazing sunrise while you’re backpacking, one of the best places you can go is Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Angkor Wat is a temple complex in Angkor that was built in the 12th century and it’s still stunning today.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Finally, if you’re hoping to take in some amazing wildlife, gorilla trekking in Uganda is a great option. You’ll be able to go camping and see not just gorillas but many other animals in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and surrounding areas.

Situated on the Red Sea Riviera in Egypt is Makadi Bay. This budding resort town, about an hour’s drive south of Hurghada, offers its visitors some of the best diving in the area as well as the sunshine any beach resort traveler craves. Between the fascinating historical town of Luxor, which can easily be visited from the bay, and the bustling Souq Makadi brimming with traditional wares there is always an adventure to be had while exploring the culture of the area. Still, the divine diving is a major draw for anyone looking for an underwater adventure.

Makadi Bay is truly a diver’s dream. The vibrant coral reefs stretch across the bay just awaiting divers eager to explore their depths and discover the marine life. The area’s developers have been extremely careful to respect the integrity of the area, which makes for a beautiful diving experience in a largely untouched ecosystem. In fact, jetties have been built so swimmers looking to enjoy the sea and keep them separate from the diver’s paradise.

The coral reefs of Makadi Bay, Red Sea are nationally protected and include stunning walls and pinnacles, which enrich the bio-system and ensure an unforgettable dive. The colorful coral gardens can be enjoyed through snorkeling as well as scuba diving. Nearby Makadi Bay, about 20km south of Hurghada, is some fantastic fringing reef with easily accessible coral. Here travelers can rent snorkeling equipment and spend an afternoon, or entire day, marveling at the thriving beauty of underwater sea life in the Red Sea.

Of course, the soft sand and all that comes with a picturesque beach cannot be overlooked when planning a trip to Makadi Bay. The mild climate, tempered by a slight breeze, makes sunbathing practically mandatory for holidaymakers. With the jetties built specifically for swimmers, it is easy to spend the day sunning and swimming without wishing for anything more. Still, there are some travelers who yearn for some excitement while on holiday.

Aside from the gorgeous reefs, fantastic windsurfing and dune safaris are available to the adventurous traveler. Makadi’s climate is perfect for fun and safe windsurfing across the shallow waters in the bay. The resort offers lessons and equipment for those looking to speed across the sunlit waters. The steep dunes are something to marvel at simply because they are so spectacular themselves. While on a dune safari the adventurer will spend time at desert oases and experience a Bedouin camp.

There are many different reasons to check out the Red Sea Riviera. The area is especially popular among Italian, British, and Egyptian holidaymakers looking for sun, relaxation, and a little adventure. Not only is this part of Egypt steeped in historical significance and home to a thriving culture, but also there are many opportunities for adventure. The desert mountains create the perfect breeze for windsurfing, the dunes can be explored, and fascinating marine life can be discovered while diving. Certainly, anyone who enjoys snorkeling or scuba diving will recognize the unique beauty of Makadi Bay.

Hot air balloon flights could replace the more traditional air flight by 2020, this is the view of 34% and 4% even think that time travel is a possibility in the future. Some folk are just not happy with today’s type of holiday; some fancy a float through space as opposed to relaxing on a sunny beach.

You could book another holiday at a caravan park in Devon this summer, or you could extend your wings a bit and consider strolling the tundra with penguin, or racing through sand dunes on a 4 x 4 jeep. If you stretch your limits just a bit, you could also consider trekking up the sides of some of the largest mountains in the world or bicycling through the native jungles of any continent that you wish.

While some of these dreams may seem a bit outlandish, with Exodus adventure tours almost every dream that you have ever harboured can become a reality. Voted the Best Adventure Tour Company on the planet Earth by National Geographic Magazine and winner of countless of other accolades, there is a reason why Exodus is so well known: because they offer holiday experiences you could never hope to match.

Whether you want to spend your time in the sea diving for lost treasures and observing the wondrous reef formations of the world or would prefer to climb onto a camel as you experience the best that the desert has to offer, Exodus can make it happen.

Even those who want to up the ante on their skiing holiday this year can take advantage of an Exodus adventure tour to supplement their alpine skiing with a dog sled race, penguins, or jet skiing across the tundra. Due to the fact that Exodus offers something for everyone, it is easy to believe that when they promise to ‘reset your compass’ they will on your next holiday.

So, you can head out to the beach for a little tanning this summer in Devon, or you can embark on one of the most exciting holidays of your choice; what is your inner compass telling you to do?

Get inspired with this video.

Borneo is divided into three sections, each administered by a different country. Brunei is a tiny sovereign country on the northwest coast; the rest divided between East Malaysia and Indonesia. A visit to Borneo should include all of them, but if time is limited, here are a few of the myriad options for excitement and adventure.

Brunei is often called the ‘gateway to Borneo’, and Brunei Bay was the traditional safe anchorage for sailors, back when the island was all unexplored jungle complete with headhunters. Some things have changed, and the contrasts are fascinating, with five and six star hotels less than an hour away from some of the wildest, most untouched areas in the world. Guided tours are the best way to go, with boat trips and overland hikes into the rainforest offering a truly fantastic experience. For an unforgettable and ‘authentic’ exploration of this wild wonderland, you can hire a dugout longboat, called a temuai, to navigate the rivers.

The two east Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah also typify the remarkable contrast between modern civilization and 2,000-year-old tradition. A visit to an Iban longhouse is an absolute must; you can take an overnight jaunt by minibus and riverboat to one of the community lodging houses where a whole village lives and works together. You may get to see some genuine shrunken heads, too.

Kalimantan will provide a challenge to the adventurous, as it is still almost virgin rainforest, but the wildlife and native flora are a huge draw for eco-tourists and well worth the effort. An up-close encounter with “the wild man of Borneo” – the orangutan – is a good possibility and not to be missed if you get the opportunity

And this is made easier for rogue operators as online travel has in parts become the lawless wild west of the travel industry.

An internet search for “climb Kilimanjaro” throws up lots of impressive looking websites but many are “virtual businesses” – just a man, a website and a phone. Climbs are routinely sub-contracted to local operators without quality controls or risk assessment; European laws designed to protect consumers are flouted; and many operators do not even bother with basic insurance. They are disasters waiting to happen. And in the case of climbing Kilimanjaro disaster may mean a fatality from Altitude Sickness.

The number one search return for “climb Kilimanjaro” says this about insurance “I am afraid that it’s an awkward situation, in that we can’t get insurance for taking treks on the mountain” (Nonsense!) and on the safety of customers money adds ” I can promise you that we are healthy financially …..but I can’t offer you any guarantees beyond my word” (Even though EU law makes it illegal not to provide a lot more than your word). And a response from another web operator shows the root of the problem: “We are a UK registered company for the sole purpose of booking and banking.” Presumably this is meant to let you know that the UK registered company doesn’t do anything like comply with UK laws.

This sort of deliberate deception is not just boring bureaucracy: climbing Kilimanjaro is a potentially dangerous undertaking and operators that take shortcuts to avoid costs down the mountain will look to take similar shortcuts on the mountain with disastrous consequences.

To ensure your experience on Kilimanjaro is up with that of Martina Navratilova use this checklist to vet your operator, provided by tailor-made specialist Private Kilimanjaro.

1. Make sure the operator is a member of ABTA or similar?

Membership of a recognised travel body, while not a guarantee of quality, is a good indication that the firm you are looking at is reputable and trustworthy.

2. Check that they have financial bonding and insurance

Bonding means that whatever happens you are protected financially and proper insurance not only provides protection but is another good sign of quality as an operator cannot get insurance without having well prepared operational and risk management plans

3. Check they have their own valid Tanzanian Tourist Board operating licence and do not sub-contract

In order to operate legally in Tanzania operators have to be licensed by the TTB. Some operators avoid this scrutiny by borrowing another firm’s licence. This is illegal and a sure sign of bad practise.

4. Ensure they will provide a minimum of two qualified guides on every trip (even for a single person) and a minimum ratio of 1 guide for three climbers

Two guides for just one climber might seem excessive but even guides can get ill or have an accident. With two or more climbers, maintaining a high guide ratio ensures that the needs of every climber can be looked after

5. Ask if you are being offered a private or group climb and a fixed or flexible itinerary

Group climbs and fixed itineraries can be cheaper but the real price paid is that the success rate is lower and a cheap climb that doesn’t get you to the top can later seem very expensive

6. Check the quality of the equipment they use and the food they provide on the mountain

Kilimanjaro is a very tough environment and a small cramped tent that leaks will totally spoil your climb as surely as a lack of good quality food.

7. Ask what happens if your flight is cancelled or your luggage delayed

Flight delays and lost luggage are an all too familiar part of life in Africa so ask what happens if you arrive a day after the climb is scheduled to start! Has it left without you?

8. Ask what happens if one of your group falls ill and has to descend

Sadly some people will get sick on Kilimanjaro and be forced to descend. Check it is possible to continue so that at least some can summit.

9. Check what is included in the price quoted

Compare costings carefully- even some of the largest operators miss out the cost of the Park Fees of up to £500 per person in the prices they quote and add these on as a locally paid cost

10. And ask for real live customer references

Do not just rely on website testimonials-they are far too easy to fake. Get some email addresses or better phone numbers and check out previous customers yourselves.

None of this of course is rocket science and it might seem a bit like hard work but if you are spending the best part of £1300 on a climb and potentially risking your life isn’t a bit of checking things out worthwhile.

Adrenaline-filled ways to discover the wild world

Whether you’re looking for an unusual way to spend your Christmas gift vouchers or just daydreaming, here are some of the world’s top experiences which combine nature and adrenaline:

1)	Shark Diving

Sharks are the biggest and most notorious fish of them all, and a must-see for anyone with a love of the underwater world. Shark diving is often done in a cage, which both protects you from the shark’s bite, and allows those without diving qualifications to take part safely. Some of the best shark diving is done by qualified divers in tropical waters, where species such as hammerheads and lemon sharks can be safely swam with, along with colourful tropical fish.

2)	Wilderness Skydiving

One of the best ways we have to appreciate the beauty of our own natural world – skydiving is a short burst of thrilling freefall, followed by a relaxing float back down to ground. The key for nature lovers is location. A skydive into a field in the UK might yield a few grazing cows, but a skydive into an African nature reserve or Australian wilderness will see you a panorama of the world as it was meant to be, before homo sapiens came along. Unless you’re qualified, you’ll need to do a tandem skydive with an instructor.

3)	Volcano Trekking

The world is full of fantastic locations for all sorts of trekking, but trekking up a volcano is truly something different, offering a chance to literally see the earth being formed. Looking into the steaming, magma-bubbling crater of an active volcano is the closest any of us will ever get to the centre of the earth. There are trekkable volcanoes to suit all levels of ability around the world, from tropical to snow-covered.

4)	Kayak Safaris

Kayak safaris are a great way to see nature, both in and around the water. They’re available in locations all over the world, and can last anything from a few hours to a few days or even weeks. Some of the most rewarding kayak safaris are in African nature reserves, where you can paddle through mangrove swamps, see turtles and flocks of water birds, and admire the graceful game that come to drink at the water’s edge. Those with the right experience and training can choose safaris that include plenty of white water rapids, while those without can go for calmer waters.

5)	Extreme mountain biking

Even gentler forms of mountain biking are a great way to combine seeing nature with a bit of adventure. The higher you go, and the more challenging the terrain, the better the views – and the bigger the risks. One of the most notorious trails in the world is near Whistler, the site of the recent Winter Olympics. Known as ‘Comfortably Numb’, it is 3,323ft at its highest, and takes you through cougar and black bear territory, past rushing waterfalls and through lush forest.

Choose an adventure this winter, not just a holiday!

When you think of Mount Everest what does the mind conjure? Height, snow, peaks, views, Himalayas, hiking, adventure? Yes, yes, yes. What you might not know is just how accessible it is to the general public, so if it’s something you’ve always wanted to do but aren’t experienced then fear not. Meager novices like us now get a chance to climb the highest mountain in the world by booking up with an adventure travel company, and what an adventure it would be. So if you’re wondering what to do during your winter holidays, why not indulge yourself and achieve a lifetimes dream?

Choose an Everest Base Camp Trek and get to climb through forests of magnolia and rhododendron, walk among frozen rivers and experience the icy wilderness; get to see the most stunning views of Everest and glacier cascading and come away being able to say ‘I’ve climbed Everest’. I am aware I may be painting a rather idyllic picture without warning you of the sheer physical challenge that climbing Everest is, but I am not talking to the faint hearted here, I am sure you are fully aware that despite the tallest mountain in the world being ‘open’ to us it still requires a certain level of physical and mental fitness that doesn’t lend itself to the archetypal couch potato. Of course one would need to put in some serious training prior to their trek, but what you put in you get out right? The more I read about Everest the more magical it sounds, and anyone that has ever pushed themselves physically to achieve a goal will know just how rewarding that is.

So, if you fancy an adventure and challenge this year why don’t you choose from the array of activity holidays on offer and get training now. Most Adventure Travel companies recommend booking early to save disappointment and they assure you this isn’t a sales pitch, rather advice to save from the fluctuating flight prices the Christmas season presents.

Voyages of Discovery has announced huge savings on its summer 2009 programme – increasing early booking discounts on ex-UK cruises from Harwich to at least 50% and offering huge savings of up to £900 pp on its fly cruises.

In an unusual move, the destination-led cruise specialist will also honour existing summer 2009 bookings with the savings. The new fares are strictly limited in availability and will run on a first come, first served basis.

From May to late August next year, all of Voyages of Discovery’s eclectic summer voyages from the UK will sail on a round trip from Harwich, with destinations ranging from Scandinavia to Russia, including the Baltic and Northern Waters. A selection of exciting fly cruises is also available to the Mediterranean. As ever, a highly acclaimed team of lecturers and guest speakers will be onboard to enrich the experience.

Don’t miss the boat – prices start at just £599 pp for the eight-day Norwegian Fjords I voyage departing Harwich on 24 May 2009 (brochure early booking price was £899).

The 10-day Italian Odyssey voyage departing 10 September 2009 (departs Gatwick – £15 supplement for Manchester), costs from just £1099 pp (brochure early booking price was £1,299).

Fares are based on two sharing a twin-bedded inside cabin and with all on-board meals and with entertainment, gratuities and port charges included (unlike many other cruise lines), and with the added value of free parking at Harwich or selected transfers to the port on no-fly cruises, it means that Voyages of Discovery’s value for money continues to be second to none!

Full ATOL and ABTA protection means that your money and holiday is safe. Voyages of Discovery also guarantees no currency or fuel surcharges.

For full details of the savings and voyages available, call 01444 462150 or visit www.voyagesofdiscovery.co.uk.

Australia is a fascinating country, combining stunning natural landscapes with major cities. Its diverse and dramatic scenery attracts many backpackers to the continent, as there is so much to explore and experience.

Western Australia has a diverse range of attractions from Shark Bay, King Sound and other beaches, to trekking through deserts and the outback. The state capital is Perth, where it is possible to take advantage of the nightlife and sightseeing. Accommodation for backpackers is mostly traditional hostels although facilities vary. There is a range of hotel/motel accommodation, bed and breakfast or the option of renting a campervan which would combine travel and accommodation. Western Australia is easy to reach by air (international flights at Perth and domestic flights to cities in Western Australia). The easyrider coach is great for backpackers as you can buy jump on jump off tickets valid for six months.

New South Wales is a region not to be avoided. Visitors to Sydney should consider climbing the harbour bridge or going to the opera house. Not to be missed is a trip to world famous Bondi Beach, and the national parks of New South Wales are breathtaking, with beautiful forests and mountains. Much of the accommodation around Sydney is hostel accommodation with the option of some self catering flats, bed and breakfast and hotel/motel stays.

The Northern Territory is less explored but still a popular destination. The capital of the region is Darwin, where many tours begin from. There are options to explore Kakadu National Park, to venture into the outback and also to see the fantastic spectacle of Uluru. Accommodation is mostly hostels and campsites/caravan parks although hotel/motel, lodge and self catering accommodation is available. The region is accessible by air, rail and road from most parts of Australia and is easy to fly to from Asia.

Queensland is a popular region to explore because of features such as its fantastic coastline (home to the Great Barrier Reef), golden beaches and its rainforests and stunning natural scenery further inland. Brisbane and Cairns are the main cities of the region. Queensland has an extensive public transport network so it is easy to travel around the region by air, road, rail, or even boat.

Tasmania is the smallest Australian state, but still has much to offer with stunning rainforests, lakes, mountains and beaches. Tasmania`s cities and towns are also worth exploring, rich in heritage and culture. Transport options in Tasmania include boats, car hire, coach services, buses, planes, cycling and taxis. Hostels, hotels/motels, farm stay, caravan and camping and bed and breakfast accommodation is available on the island.

Backpacking around Australia can be a life-changing experience, opening your eyes to different cultures and landscapes. However it is important to consider local and international safety advice and to ensure that the equipment you travel with is appropriate for example what backpacks will be best for your trip and what you will need to carry. Careful planning (allowing room for flexibility) is key to a successful and enjoyable backpacking experience in Australia.

For those concerned about spending a weekend with a group of strangers, the organisation hosts an initial ‘ice-breaker’ introduction which includes champagne, a meal and a chance to relax and mingle. Speedbreaks have found however, that the best ice-breaker is when everyone’s involved in the activities end up getting on amazingly well.
