Edinburgh’s best known attraction is also one of its most affordable, the National Museum of Scotland. Plan a few hours to see a comprehensive collection of all things Scottish, including artefacts from Charles Darwin’s voyages. While you are museum-going, stop by the National Galleries of Scotland to see an excellent art collection, and visit the Royal Botanic Garden to see a garden with roots going all of the way back to the 18th century, if the weather allows.

Plan to get out and walk a bit. The Royal Mile winds up towards Edinburgh Castle. Along the way, you will pass many attractions as well as ample opportunities to try on a kilt or buy yourself something else with an authentic Scottish tartan. Try to be at the castle on Saturday at 13.00 to hear the field gun firing. The view from atop the castle is an excellent way to see the lie of the land in and around Edinburgh. If you still have energy, hike to the top of Arthur’s Seat which is not only Edinburgh’s tallest hill, but also an extinct volcano. All of the walking that you will do will undoubtedly leave you hungry. Although Edinburgh’s many pubs are an inviting place to rest and have a pint of bitters, make sure you sample Scotland’s national beverage. The Scotch Whisky Experience on Castlehill in Old Town combines an excellent scotch shop with an exhibit that includes a barrel ride and introduces you to the history and process of the making of Scotch whiskey. Your admission also includes a dram, so that you can taste it for yourself.

Although Edinburgh has enough indoor attractions to make it a great place to spend a weekend all year-round, summertime is especially pleasant. If you time your summer visit right, you can spend your weekend during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Although it started out as an alternative to the broader Edinburgh festival season, the years have legitimised it… to a point. Held in 2012 from 3 August through 27 August, it will offer a range of different types of entertainment, all of which will be at least a little bit different. London hotel prices were down by 12% to £111 per room on average in the last three months of last year, making it a great time to holiday at home in the capital.

However, the weakness of the pound meant that average prices paid by European and US travellers were down by as much as 24% in London, making the city an even more attractive destination for foreign travellers. Hotels.com saw a 49% increase in the number of searches by Eurozone travellers for London hotels in December 2008 compared to a year earlier, as travellers sought to take advantage of the struggling pound.

The Hotels.com HPI tracks the real prices paid per hotel room, rather than advertised rates, for 68,000 hotels across 12,500 locations around the world. The latest Hotel Price Index looked at prices from October to December 2008, compared to the same period the year before.

UK hotel prices were down by an average of 12% at the end of 2008, with hotels in the north-west seeing some of the biggest price drops. Prices in Blackpool fell by 22% to an average of £79 per room per night, and in Manchester by 19% to £73.

On the other hand, Bath was the only city at the top of the price league in which the prices paid for hotel rooms actually rose – by 3% in Q4 2008 to £119. It remained the most expensive city in the UK.

While UK travellers benefitted from significant price falls last year, visitors from Europe and the US enjoyed even bigger savings as the fall in hotel prices was compounded by the weak Sterling.

Cities leading the price falls alongside London (down 24%), were Manchester (down 24%) and Glasgow (down 23%). US travellers paid a similar proportion less for UK hotel rooms in Q4 2008 – average prices paid by travellers from the States to the UK fell by 25% between Q4 2007 and Q4 2008.

Prices fell across many of the major UK cities in the third quarter of 2008 as hoteliers – particularly those in Scotland – looked to ensure that occupancy levels were maximised.

Leading the falls in Scotland was Inverness, where prices fell 15% to an average of £94. Inverness was closely followed by Aberdeen, where prices fell by 11% to £96 on average. In England, Birmingham was the city most affected by price falls, experiencing a 13% drop in prices from £75 to £66 per room per night.

However, a notable exception to the national picture was in the UK’s most expensive city, Bath. Prices here were up by some 13% in the third quarter of 2008 compared to the same time in 2007, to an average of £142 per night.

Prices in London also fell by 3% year on year to average £116 per room per night in quarter three of 2008, but are still the second most expensive in the UK.

The HPI from Hotels.com also revealed that Edinburgh was the third most expensive city for hotels in the UK at £106 per room per night, despite experiencing a 5% drop in prices.
