Although there are advantages to planning and booking a holiday in advance, sometimes acting on impulse can also prove fruitful. Travel agents often list last minute offers on the high street, and there are a growing number of ABTA bonded holiday agents online that specialise in last minute bargains.

What people term as lastminute can vary, with holidays being booked literally on the day of travel, or several days/weeks in advance. The size of discount you receive will depend on when and where you want to travel, and the type of holiday you are looking for. Some travel agents will stick to certain destinations, or board basis/star rating of hotels. While it might be easy to find an all-inclusive late deal in one country, the late deals may only cover self-catering in another.

The best times to try booking a last minute deal will be low season, so look out for periods when there are no school holidays or local festivals planned. These periods often fall at the start or end of a particular destinations ‘season’. You could book a ski break in Jan/April time, or find a good value glacier skiing experience in European summer time, while low season summer breaks are available at various times to destinations such as Spain, The Canary Islands, Turkey, Greece, and Egypt.

Whichever late deal you choose, it’s always advisable to book your airport parking at the same time. Meet and Greet and VIP Airport Parking do get booked up in advance, and parking services in general can be more expensive if you try to pay on the day. So, for cheap Heathrow Parking, or a space at any other UK airport, book online before you travel.

If you can be flexible, then last minute holiday offers can be an ideal way to source a good value break.

Bangkok is one of the Far East’s great tourist destination cities, offering visitors an incredible array of exotic and unusual sites and sounds, which bombard the senses from every angle. Bangkok is an ancient city steeped in a long and varied history, which can be seen in its incredible ancient architecture. It is also an ultra modern city with stunning modern glass towers reaching into the sky adorned by stunning light shows and 30 story high-tech billboards.

Bangkok holiday packages usually begin at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, which is less than an hour from the main areas of Bangkok, and is easily reached by taxis which are priced controlled, or the soon to open skytrain extension.

The Skytrain is the very latest in high-tech passenger transport in the form of an elevated train system which speeds people quickly and cheaply across many areas usually visited by tourists.

There are so many things to see and do in this massive sprawling city it is hard to know what to miss out on, as the average Bangkok holiday simply does not allow enough time for all that the city can deliver to the hundreds of thousands of visitors it receives each year.

One of the must see attractions is the Grand Palace and Wat Prakaew, here you will find the ancient home of the Thai Royal Court with its intricate and stunning detail, and thoroughly beautiful ancient Thai architecture. The adjoining Wat Prakaew is the temple that is home to the famous and revered Emerald Buddha.

Another incredible destination is the Damnoen Saduak floating market, where visitors can buy fresh fruits, flowers and a whole array of other goods directly from the sales ladies who ply their wares from tiny canoes, which they paddle up and down the canals that make up possibly the world’s most unusual marketplace.

A more modern attraction is found in the basement of the huge Siam Paragon shopping mall, in the form of Siam Ocean World, an incredible undersea world which offers in excess of 30,000 different marine species in seven separate huge exhibition areas. Here you can not only view the marine life you can also feed some of the fish, and even take the opportunity to dive with sharks and stingrays.

Perhaps one of the most tantalising attractions for anyone taking their holidays in Bangkok is the city itself; just walking around the streets can be an incredible experience in its own right. The site sounds and smells are like nothing many Westerners have ever experienced before.

You can not walk more than a few yards without coming across a street vendor selling fresh fruit or Thai food delicacies cooked to perfection right in front of your eyes. Surprisingly these street vendor’s managed to serve their food in a very hygienic fashion, so the risk of tummy upset is low when compared to the risk of missing out on partaking in a real Bangkok food experience. Whenever you visit Bangkok you are sure to come away with the desire to return again to enjoy the experiences that you missed out on the first visit.

Switzerland is a beautiful place to visit any and all seasons of the year. It is just as renowned for its mountain climbing, hiking, rafting, and nature adventures as its winter sports.

If you are fond of the more urbane, Switzerland’s cities like Zurich, Geneva, and Berne offer a rich history of the arts, architecture, and culinary cuisine.

If you are highly adventurous, than you must visit Interlaken, which is the country’s action sports capital. There, you can try your hand at white water rafting, mountain climbing, ice climbing, bungee jumping, and skydiving.

For mountaineering and hiking you want to head to the Jungfrau region, which is considered by many Europeans to have the most magnificent mountain scenery in the world.

Take a trip to Zermatt for almost any adventure you can think of in the footprint of the great Matterhorn.

Switzerland offers everything for all travellers, any time. If you want the isolation of a stay in a scenic, secluded, rustic mountain cabin, you can have it in Switzerland. If you are after the sports adventure of a lifetime, you can have it in Switzerland. If you want to enjoy the most romantic, cultural, and historic cities in all of Europe, you can do it in Switzerland.

Of course, with all of these adventures to be had and exciting diversions to be undertaken, Switzerland is a perfect family destination. Adults and children of all ages will find something to enjoy and remember time and time again in Switzerland.

Of course, if you just want to enjoy the world’s best skiing, that’s okay too.

Booking a holiday is no longer a stressful experience thanks to the ease with which you can book a holiday online from the comfort of your own home. If relaxing is right at the top of your agenda, as it is for many people when arranging holiday, then an all inclusive holiday to Egypt might just be exactly what you need. All inclusive means you don’t have to leave your holiday complex and, if you prefer, you can just sit by the pool and enjoy the sun, with everything you need provided.

The advantages of an all inclusive holiday are clear to see as not only are you able to stay in luxurious accommodation, but you also get great tasting meals provided by the hotel restaurant. That leaves nothing to worry about whatsoever and you won’t have to lift a finger at any stage of your trip. Alongside all inclusive accommodation you can also select full board, half board, bed and breakfast, self catering or room only depending on which option suits your needs best.

If you are interested in venturing out of your hotel and exploring what the country has to offer then there are plenty of resorts that provide a wide selection of activities to enjoy. One resort that might take your fancy is Hurghada. Hurghada holidays will put you in the heart of a vibrant and bustling resort in a destination that has come a long way since its time as a sleepy fishing village.

Holidays to Hurghada have become particularly popular with people looking to have a good time and let their hair down – and fortunately, the resort is something of a mecca for party goers. There is plenty of nightlife for visitors with partying at the top of their to-do list. But this isn’t all that the resort offers and like many Egyptian tourist destinations, there is a chance for visitors to experience scuba diving and undertake an unforgettable trip under water.

If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground you can go on a desert excursion while on holiday in Hurghada. The baron landscape of sand dunes and rugged mountains is equally as stunning as the calm waters of the Red Sea. You can even get an authentic experience of Bedouin culture and spend an evening under the stars in a Bedouin camp where you will be welcomed with open arms and treated to traditional entertainment.

Hurghada is just one of many tourist destinations in Egypt that offer visitors an unforgettable holiday in the sun. From Hurghada you can take a day trip to Luxor and discover ancient Egypt, or take a short trip to the nearby resorts of El Gouna and Soma Bay that both serve as locations for a fun day out. Slightly further afield and Taba and Sharm El Sheikh also have plenty to offer tourists, and you may just need to book a longer holiday than you thought in order to take in everything that Egypt has to offer.

In fact, the Bodrum Museum of Archaeology makes for a very interesting visit, as does Bodum Castle and the local marketplaces. Even in winter the bay attracts people for winter sports because the high-altitude Mountains around Bodum are covered in snow all year long. The mountains also present a welcome challenge to hikers and mountaineers and perfect weather for sailing means equally perfect weather for paragliding, gliding and hot air ballooning too!

Boutique Hotels

So, Bodrum is a great holiday location but where is it a good idea to stay? Boutique hotels offer convenience and personal service. There are a number of excellent boutique hotels in Bodrum, such as the intimate Butterfly Hotel with its wonderfully picturesque views, comfortable and modern guest rooms and exceptional services such as laundry, fax services, wireless internet and multi-lingual TV.

Or how about the Atami Hotel? It`s another boutique beauty with stunning vistas, luxury accommodation and competitive room rates. High season a double room for two people costs around 135 Euros a night and low season the same room is just 90 Euros.

Sailing and Mooring

Sailing in the warm Turkish waters of the Aegean sea is a delight and luckily there are lots of companies out there offering days out on the water or even holidays aboard gullets (wooden sail boats which are a little like boat-hotels.) If you`re interested in booking a gullet cruise or taking your own yacht out on the blue there will be two things to think about; the first is sailing and we`ll tell you a little bit about some of the companies offering gullet cruises next, then there is mooring, which you won`t need to think about unless you`re sailing the yacht or boat yourself!

When it comes to booking a Turkish gullet cruise you`ll find lots of companies online. For archaeological tours combined with a gullet cruise holiday consider Peter Somner Tours, or for a light break aboard a gullet you could visit the Bareboat Sailing Holidays website.

When it comes to mooring your own yacht or gullet, (either rented or bought) you can work out a route and find plenty of places to moor on the way. You`d need to arrange and pay for each mooring separately though unless it was included in a boat-hire package.

Activities in Bodrum

There is simply tons to see and do in Bodrum. You can go white water rafting, windsurf, swim and even learn to horse ride at one of the local horse riding schools. Those interested might also enjoy some diving with Askin Dive School where you can get up close and personal with colourful fish. Or you could try your hand at jet skiing or even go parasailing.

There are also some companies which offer Jeep Safaris in to the Turkish mountains making for an exciting on and off-road experience, visiting waterfalls and taking the path less trodden. Often you can easily book activities when you purchase travel deals through a travel agent or holiday website.

Relax on one of the many beautiful white beaches, take a walk through the Troödos mountains or uncover Cypriot history at one of the many archaeological sites; whatever your choice of past-time, Cyprus will not disappoint. Finding the right hotel that suits you may be a trickier task, so here’s a guide to four of the best hotels for a holiday in Cyprus.

The Amathus Beach Hotel in Paphos was designed to provide the ultimate in luxurious hospitality in a modern and tasteful setting. Situated just over a mile from a delightful fishing harbour, the understated properties of the Amathus Beach Hotel nestle amongst beautiful landscaped gardens and are just a stone’s throw from the seashore. With an excellent range of facilities including multiple swimming pools, a chic contemporary bar and well-equipped gym, the Amathus Beach Hotel in Paphos should meet all your needs on a luxury holiday.

For a slightly grander experience, you should consider the Four Seasons Hotel in Limassol. Offering all the facilities you would expect from a well-respected resort hotel, the Four Seasons stretches along a stunning sandy beach with an extensive range of entertainment facilities, restaurants and boutiques. With a distinctly lavish finish that never fails to impress, the spacious rooms provide the ultimate in comfort that will meet and exceed your expectations. The Four Seasons Hotel in Cyprus is also home to one of the five Shiseido Spas in the world, where Thalassotherapy takes true relaxation to the next level.

Set on its own secluded beach, The Hotel Elysium in Paphos is a hotel that stylishly matches its historical surroundings and boasts superb views across the Mediterranean Sea. Located next to the Tombs of the Kings, the magnificent design of the hotel is influenced heavily by the Byzantine era and the gorgeous rooms and villas make for a genuinely authentic experience. In addition to the shops, restaurants and bars in the area, the picturesque harbour of Paphos is just a 10 minute walk away. But for the ultimate in relaxation, the Opium Health Spa is a must, offering a range of revitalising treatments in a wonderfully tranquil setting.

The Amathus Beach Hotel in Limassol should also be high on your luxury hotel shortlist. Belonging to the prestigious group of Leading Hotels of the World, the Amathus Beach Hotel will meet and exceed your expectations of luxury. Set amongst beautifully landscaped gardens, this hotel boasts panoramic views of the sea, has its own private sandy beach and the five themed restaurants provide a variety of culinary delights. The newly-extended Amathus Spa & Wellness Centre offers personalised treatments from five different continents and compliments the classy and tranquil feel of the entire hotel experience.

Online travel agent On the Beach saw a significant rise in bookings for summer 2010 during the Christmas period, with the Spanish Canary Islands proving the most popular destinations amongst sun starved Britons.

Along with the Canary Islands of Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, Egypt and Turkey (the latter being the most popular destination for summer 2009), are both proving popular for 2010, mirroring the trend for last season.

Early indications also suggest that compared to 2009, the North African destinations of Tunisia and Morocco will welcome more British holidaymakers in 2010.

Furthermore, of all bookings made during December, 42% were for travel during summer 2010, which is further proof that holidaymakers are determined on taking a summer holiday next year.

However, research by On the Beach also suggests that whilst holidaymakers will be travelling during next year’s Fifa World Cup, British holidaymakers are being careful not to travel on the dates England are playing their important group matches. England play their matches on July 12, 18 and 23 and early flight bookings for travel on these dates are down by an average of 40%.

Alistair Daly, Marketing Director at On the Beach says, “The festive season has been very busy at On the Beach as money conscious holidaymakers have been eager to snap up the best end of year deals on offer. Our bookings suggest that 2010 will be a better year for Spanish destinations and whilst most of us will not be travelling to South Africa to follow England during the World Cup, it’s clear that many Brits will be cheering on the Three Lions from the comfort of a beach bar in the sun.”

Founded in 1995, On the Beach is one of the UK’s leading online travel agencies carrying over 500,000 passengers every year (ABTA K0813). On the Beach provides value for money flights and hotels in the world’s most popular beach holiday destinations. On the Beach provides consumers with a huge selection of travel products, from 50 million available seats, more than 30,000 hotels around the world, insurance and in-resort transfer partners. Customers can book online at www.onthebeach.co.uk or by calling the UK call centre on 0870 606 07 08

The travel companies, First Choice and Thomson, have put together these handy top tips for finding a bargain holiday in 2010.:

1) Book early. As ever, the best bargains are to be had by booking now. With early booking discounts, such as save £200* per booking, as well as further reductions on selected holidays available in store, it really is the best time to book, especially for those who can’t be so flexible with dates, such as families with school-age children. And with low deposits from £30 on offer across Thomson and First Choice in January, you can relax safe in the knowledge that your seat on the plane is secure.

2) Look out for FREE CHILD places. Free child places are not a gimmick and can make a really big difference to the cost of your holiday. First Choice know a thing or two about offering great family holidays, and what better deal to offer parents than free kids’ places. Both Thomson and First Choice are offering thousands of free child places on offer across hundreds of holidays, including school-holiday dates, it’s another reason to get in quick before they go, and save on the overall cost of your holiday. You’ll find this amazing offer in the brochures, at your local travel shop or online at www.firstchoice.co.uk or www.thomson.co.uk.

3) Upgrade to all inclusive. This year has seen the rise and rise of popularity of the all-inclusive holiday, with Thomson and First Choice noticing a 32% increase in demand. All-inclusive holidays include the cost of drinks, meals and snacks plus some activities up front. This option allows you to better budget your holiday spending before even leaving the UK. In accordance to demand, Thomson and First Choice have increased the number of their all-inclusive holidays so that they now make up 42% of all holidays for next year, offering even more fantastic choice to our customers. We’ll toast to that!

4) Go for 10 or 11 nights. While traditional seven and 14 night holidays are still popular, Thomson and First Choice have noticed an increase in demand for flexible durations, including 10 and 11 night holidays. With this in mind, we have increased the number of 10 and 11 night holidays for Summer 2010 by 21%, offering more choice to those who still want a decent chunk of time away from home, but also reducing the budget of a ‘typical’ fortnight holiday.

5) Be as flexible as possible. If you have pre-school age children, try to book outside of the school holidays – not only will you get a better deal, the resort will be that bit quieter too. Or if you are tied to the school holidays, consider travelling at the very beginning or end of them as sometimes these can be the cheaper option. Also be prepared to travel from a selection of regional airports, or consider a night flight which may help lower the cost.

6) Always book with a well known ATOL protected Tour Operator. The recent demise of Scottish holiday company Globespan has put the issue of financial protection on holidays back in the headlines, and reiterated the importance of booking a holiday with a well known financially robust ATOL protected tour operator, like Thomson and First Choice. Many people simply don’t realise that most low-cost carriers and accommodation-only providers are not ATOL-protected, which means if they go bust, you lose your money. To make sure you’re not caught out, look out for the Government backed ATOL logo on brochures and other sales material, but if in doubt, visit your local Thomson or First Choice shop where our Holiday Advisors will be happy to offer advice about any company, even if you’re not booking your holiday through them.

7) Choose a holiday that’s right for you. Do your research to make sure that you end up in the right type of resort for your holiday needs. If you are travelling as a family, then First Choice’s Holiday Villages are perfect as they are designed with families in mind – with plenty of Kids Academies and activities to keep children big and small entertained, while adults can relax in the bar or pool. Check out the brand new 5 Sun Holiday Village Rhodes opening this Summer for a smashing family holiday. While Thomson knows a thing or two about catering for couples, with the stunning Sensatori collection of five star properties in Mexico, Crete and brand new for Tenerife this Summer, these luxury hotels mean you can holiday in style. Check out the brochure or websites (www.thomson.co.uk and www.firstchoice.co.uk) for feedback on what our customers think, or look at impartial sites such as www.tripadvisor.co.uk or www.holidays-uncovered.co.uk for reviews.

Save on extra luggage charges. Some budget airlines promise cheap fares, but then bump up the cost of flying with them by charging for extra luggage and check-in. When you book a package holiday with Thomson or First Choice, you can rest assured that you won’t get stung with extra charges as our airline, Thomson Airways gives you 20kg luggage allowance to check-in, which is 5kg MORE than Thomas Cook.

9) Shop around for foreign exchange. Ask your travel agent for their best deals when you book your holiday. First Choice and Thomson offer commission-free currency and a buy-back guarantee, and will even deliver your money to your door by 3pm the next day. Saves stressing at the last minute at the airport.

10) Sign up for the best deals. Thomson and First Choice send out weekly newsletters featuring their best deals for customers, direct to your inbox. These are a great source of inspiration for your next holiday, and you’ll be able to keep a close eye on all of the bargains too. And you can also follow @thomsondeals on www.twitter.com to see the best range of up to the minute Thomson holiday deals.

Alcudia is a small but very popular resort on the northeast coast of the Spanish island of Majorca. With its sheltered bay and beautiful beach added to its hotels and international cuisine restaurants, it is a favored destination for English-speaking visitors as well as German, Scandinavian, and other holiday seekers.

The perfect way to spend a holiday in Alcudia is at an all inclusive destination such as the Bellevue Hotel with 1468 modern and nicely furnished studios and apartments in its 17 buildings on 200,000 square meters of landscaped grounds and many amenities including eight swimming pools and free parking. Included in the room price is a buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; snacks; soft drinks and local alcoholic drinks; a cafe with large screen TVs; bars with dancing; the use of land sports equipment and a gym; and daily shows for entertainment. Activities such as water sports, tennis, volleyball, squash, billiards, go-karts, mini-golf, archery, horse riding, beauty services, pay movies and cable TV, and others are available but at an extra charge. The beach is only 500 meters away, is the longest beach in Majorca, and has warm waters.

The rooms have a kitchenette, balcony, satellite TV, and an in-room safety box. There are restaurants, cafeterias, pizzerias, bars including English and Irish ones, a large lobby and reception area, gift shops, gardens, marina, and lakes on which you can go canoeing. A currency exchange, tour and car rental desk, a mini-market, laundry/dry cleaning service, a doctor on call, and more are provided.

If it is a family vacation, for young children there is a mini-club and nine children’s swimming pools, babysitting and baby furniture rentals available, children’s TV channels and films, a supervised playroom, and a separate children’s buffet with catered dietary needs if needed. For older children there is a supervised games room with video games, pool tables, ping-pong, and an internet area. Activities programs are there for all ages as well as a disco.

If you want to go off-site, there are many nearby activities to take part in: regular and miniature golfing, boating, fishing, sailing, snorkeling, surfing, parasailing, scuba diving, water skiing, and windsurfing. There are also bicycle and scooter/moped rentals available, mountain biking, walking trails, horse riding, and a bird sanctuary.

The town of Alcudia has shops, a special twice-weekly market that features unique items such as leather goods and lace tablecloths and many souvenirs, a steep hill to climb which gives you a magnificent view, an active night life, and a water amusement park.

The Old Town of Alcudia is located only two miles away and is intriguing with its massive city walls , two gates, narrow street, and large towers. Near the town are Roman ruins including an amphitheater and one of the oldest churches in Majorca.

Fish restaurants are excellent at the harbor; and there are eating establishments with Mediterranean and European cuisine where you can get an English or Scottish breakfast, fish and chips, or Yorkshire pudding and roast beef. There is also a choice of Indian, Chinese, Italian, French, Spanish, and local dishes.

You can book cheap Majorca holidays from most UK tour operators.

Thomson has re-introduced holidays in Cuba from Summer 2009, and its new year round programme offers a range of exceptional holiday experiences, from all inclusive hotels to twin centre holidays, as well as some unforgettable tours. However, rumour has it that President Obama plans to ease the longstanding U.S. restrictions on travel, so Cuba could change in the years to come to cater for the mass American tourist market right next door… So, have a cigar, and enjoy an authentic Cuba holiday experience with Thomson – while you still can!

Cuba is famed for its exciting history and extraordinary music and dance traditions, as well as its vibrant capital city, Havana. Expect rumba beats, daiquiri cocktails and an endless choice of great venues in a city that loves to party where, with no official licensing hours, clubs and bars tend to stay open until the last customer leaves!

However, holidays in Cuba offer all of this and so much more, as it is also home to unspoiled palm-fringed, white sandy beaches that characterise the Caribbean. Thomson’s ‘Twin Centre’ holidays allow you to combine the best of both world’s in an unforgettable holiday experience. Passengers can book either a traditional package break or twin centre holiday, combining the sights and sounds of holidays in Havana with a beach holiday in Varadero or Guardalavaca, with prices starting from just £1126 per person*.

If you prefer to get a further taste of this country, then the Sierra Maestra Tour** is a must. This tour is included in a 14-night stay that starts with a 6-day exploration of Cuba’s most historic, and scenic spots, that include the city of Holguin, Santiago de Cuba (the home of Bacardi rum), La Plata (the headquarters of Fidel Castro) and of course, the Sierra Maestra mountains. Relax and reminisce on all that you have seen for the second week, as you kick back at the beach hotel of your choice in Guardalavaca. Thomson recommends the Playa Pesquero resort, a large resort set on a beautiful beach and home to Cuba’s largest pool.

“We’re thrilled to have re-introduced the destination of Cuba to the Thomson brand”, says Shona Swain, Acting General Manager, Longhaul Product, TUI UK, ”it is a magical Caribbean experience offering so much more than just a beach holiday. The city of Havana is an absolute must and in my opinion is one of the most exciting cities in the world. There has never been a better time to visit.”

Thomson offers flights direct to Cuba from London Gatwick and Manchester airports. London Gatwick has a year round weekly service flying into Holguin and once a week service for the winter to Varadero. Thomson also has a year round weekly service flying into Varadero from Manchester. Flight only prices start from just £494 return, including taxes and charges, based on a seven night departure on 20th July 2009, from London Gatwick. All Thomson flights are now ATOL protected so customers can be confident that their money is safe.

Leading online travel agent On the Beach has witnessed a surge of late bookings to Greece and its Islands this summer, with bookings up 18% year on year.

Despite recent reports suggesting non Euro destinations will lead the way this summer, the Greek Islands are proving particularly popular amongst cost conscious holidaymakers, with hotels and airlines slashing prices in an attempt to lure Brits to the sun kissed Islands.

The Greek islands of Crete and Zakynthos have proved to be two of the biggest selling destinations at On the Beach over the past few weeks.

Other Euro destinations currently bucking the trend are mainland Spain and the Spanish islands.

A favourite amongst Brits for many years, Spain is proving popular once again with late bookings this year, with the Balearics and the Canaries both with sales up 9% year on year. The Balearic Island of Majorca is currently witnessing the biggest increase in bookings.
