The UK's Premium Holiday Report Guide

There are plenty of important things to think about when choosing to go on either Cornwall Holidays or Devon Holidays. You have to think about what sort of accommodation you want, which area in particular you want to go to, whether you want to be close to a beach, and if so, which beach, what sort of attractions you’d like to visit, what time of year to go, and on and on and on and on forever.

One of the things you don’t need to worry about very much is what minor variations there are in the food that you can buy in each region. That is, however, what this blog post is entirely devoted to.

First up are cream teas. The tea itself is fine. You can have that however you like it. The scone, clotted cream and strawberry jam, all fine as well. Stuff like that is standardised. But, and this is the big question, do you put the cream on first and then the jam, or do you put the jam on first and then the cream? In Devon you should do it one way, in Cornwall the other. I can’t even remember which is which because it’s so inconsequential, but anybody who has chosen a way thinks the other way is weird.

Next we have your traditional ice cream, made with real cream. The two big contenders in this field are Hocking’s (mostly found in Devon) and Kelly’s (generally Cornwall). They’re both great, but I can actually offer an opinion on this and say Kelly’s is better. I’m not sure why, but it’s thicker, yellower and tastier. It might be because they use clotted cream, or something? I’m really not sure. I don’t even know if they do use clotted cream. Regardless, Kelly’s is better.

I was considering having point number three be fish and chips, but I don’t think that’s really fair as it varies more from shop to shop than it does county to county, although Devon does have Squire’s in Braunton, apparently some world recognised fish and chip shop.

Ultimately, there aren’t very many differences between the two counties at all, which is why the locals do end up bickering about whether Hocking’s is better than Kelly’s or which way round the clotted cream and jam go on a scone. You don’t need to worry about counties and instead should look at much more area specific things. Besides, for whichever one you don’t go to there’s always next year.
