Gambia may not be an obvious destination to choose for a holiday but with a warm climate all year round and the flight from the UK only taking six hours; you can see why it is gaining in popularity. The capital of Gambia is Benjal, and the airport is 30 minutes away. Banjul is a unique capital in that it is situated on an island, St Mary’s, which sits in the River Gambia. It has smart architecture on one hand, and a shanty town on the other. It is also home to Gambia’s biggest brewery and the National Museum is well worth a visit.
Fans of the book Roots, by Alex Haley, will recognise the name of Julfureh as the birthplace of Kunte Kinte. There are tourist trips out to James Island, which was the main encampment for slaves. Long stretches of golden sand give Gambia some of the best beaches in the world, and the nature reserve at Abuko makes for a great family holiday. There is also an orphanage for animals and you can watch native craftsmen carving traditional wooden objects at Brikama.
Gambian food is very spicy, and can take you by surprise the first time you taste it. Most of the country cater for internationals so you have the best of both worlds. Be careful when you go shopping for your souvenirs, anything made from animal products is not allowed to leave the country. So stick to the wood carving or vibrant Batik fabrics.
A trip to Gambia will cost you in the region of £2500, but what an experience you will have. The Gambians are renowned for their friendliness and courtesy and treat British tourists like Royalty. They welcome you to their company with open arms and are proud to show you their beautiful country.
