Portugal lies at the far west of Europe, bordering Spain and encapsulates the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean, as well as nearly 90,000 km2 of mainland. It`s a year-round destination with skiing in the mountainous north during the winter months and below the Tagus River, that splits the country into two distinct areas, hundreds of fantastic sandy beaches to enjoy in the summer. The spring and autumn are perfect times to explore Portugal`s fascinating cities, discovering places such as the National Museum of Ancient Art in the capital Lisbon. The country is renowned for its championship golf courses; the Penina Championship in the Western Algarve is a challenging example. Portugal represents excellent value for money for the visitor, with discounts for families and senior citizens widespread. Portuguese food and wine is wide ranging and delicious. Port wine has a well-deserved reputation worldwide. Dry cod, grilled sardines and caldeirada (a potato stew based on meats, fish or vegetables) are all favourites. Many museums are free on certain days and drinks promotions are prevalent.

Because of its position, Portugal is a stopover for many international flights, Tap Portugal, the Portuguese airline, has scheduled flights to over 50 international destinations from its international airports at Lisbon, Porto and Faro. The rail network is generally comfy, efficient and punctual, but rail passes are recommended otherwise costs can be more than flights. It is possible to travel from Waterloo in London, via the Eurostar and then the TGV down through France to Portugal. Two cities have underground systems; the Lisbon Metro and Metro Sul do Tejo in the Lisbon Metropolitan area and Porto Metro. The Vasco de Gama Bridge spanning the Tagus River near Lisbon is currently ranked within the top ten longest bridges in the world at 17.2km long.

If hiring a car, you don`t need an international driving license, a post-EU national one will suffice. If driving your own vehicle, you will need written documentation with you to prove ownership and insurance. The quickest driving route to Portugal is via ferry from Plymouth to Santander, then it`s a 1000km drive to the capital Lisbon. Beware though; ferry prices can vary tremendously according to the season. Remember seat belts must be worn in the front and the back, the use of mobile phones is prohibited and you will need a map that was drawn after 2004, as the roads were reclassified then.

Cheap car rental Faro is highly recommended as it will give you the flexibility to visit areas off the beaten track, that can`t be visited using local public transport; beautiful sandy beaches and dramatic coastal scenery at Carvoeiro, Alvor, Lagos or Luz near Faro, or delightful architecture in the historical towns of Coimbra, Setubal, Braga and Évora. Portugal is a pleasure wherever and whenever you choose to visit.
