The UK's Premium Holiday Report Guide

The sunshine destination of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands boasts three main large tourist resorts.  In the shape of Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise.  Which is where the bulk of visitors to the island spend their holidays in Lanzarote.

But just a few minutes down the coastline from the most popular resort of Puerto del Carmen lies the ´millionaires marina’ of Puerto Calero.  Which is rapidly emerging as a holiday resort in its own right.

Puerto Calero is the brainchild of one Jose Calero – who first laid plans to create a luxury marina (Lanzarote´s first) back in 1983.  The location was ideal, as the land here is well sheltered from the prevailing North Easterly winds that blow across the island for much of the year.  Whilst the Punta Gorda mountain range also provides protection against the strong waves rolling in from the Atlantic.
Building work on the Marina started back in 1986, with the first 200 berths coming into service three years later.  Before the addition of a further 220 berths for larger luxury vessels in 1997.  Creating an atmospheric backdrop for the bars and restaurants that started to open and which today line the water front in the marina.

Accommodation in Puerto Calero
Puerto Calero really started to take off as a holiday destination in its own right with the opening of two new hotels, which are located just outside the marina.

The five star Hesperia is regarded as one of the finest hotels in Lanzarote.  Enjoying a great location on a seafront promontory that grants wonderful views down to the marina and across to the neighbouring island of Fuerteventuera. Whilst the four star Iberostar Costa Calero is located closer to the marina and boasts an excellent spa and gardens.

Self catering accommodation is also available in a selection of very smart, upmarket Puerto Calero villas.  Such as the exclusive Cortijo Mar development.

Things to  Do
Puerto Calero is known for the quality of its shops – boasting the best selection of designer outlets on the island.  With big name brands such as Hugo Boss and Tommy Hilfiger.

The marina is also home to two of the leading excursions in Lanzarote.  The Catalanza catamaran – which transports guests to the beautiful beaches at Papagayo.  And Lanzarote´s very own yellow submarine – which takes visitors on an underwater voyage of discovery.
