British consumers are clearly reluctant to relinquish their holidays abroad. According to island travel portal Lanzarote Guidebook. Who have just released figures revealing that enquiries for holiday accommodation on the island rose by over 14% during January. Despite the decline of sterling against the euro and the gloomy economic outlook in the UK.
Traditionally, British tourists have long had the hots for the Island of Fire. With visitors from the UK accounting for well over 50% of the 1.5 million non-Spanish nationals who arrive at Arrecife airport on flights to Lanzarote every year. The vast majority of whom are attracted by the great year round climate, unique volcanic scenery and over 90 breathtaking beaches.
During the course of last month the Lanzarote Guidebook website received a total of 639 enquires about villa and apartment accommodation on the island from British holiday makers. A figure which has increased by 14.2% on the same month in 2008. Suggesting that many British consumers still plan a holiday abroad during the course of this year – regardless of the credit crunch and the current economic climate.
Playa Blanca in the south of the island emerged as the most sought after holiday destination on the island amongst independent British travellers. Reflecting the fact that the resort has an abundance of the sort of good value villa accommodation that DIY holidaymakers tend to opt for. With Lanzarote´s newest holiday destination accounting for 41% of all accommodation enquires and 42.7% of all villa searches.
However Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote´s oldest resort, remains the most popular spot for those searching for holiday apartments in Lanzarote. Accounting for 56.6% of all enquiries. A figure that will come as little surprise to those who know the resort as Puerto del Carmen has the highest concentration of apartment complexes of any destination on the island.
Costa Teguise, Lanzarote´s third largest resort, didn’t fare so well though. And appears to be in danger of dropping off the radar for many British tourists. As even enquiries for rural holiday villas collectively exceeded the number of people seeking any type of accommodation there.
Overall, enquiries for villas in Lanzarote outweighed demand for holiday apartments on the island by a ratio of 4:1.
