The UK's Premium Holiday Report Guide

Plenty of travel guides will point to tried and tested holiday destinations like New York, Venice and Prague, but there are a number of less talked about cities and tours that are well worth a look.

Here are two possibilities,  Marrakech and the Algarve.

The city of Medina in Marrakech is home to the largest souk or street market, in the whole of Morocco and is one of the top things to do in Marrakech. The souks weave a colourful labyrinth through the city but despite their haphazard and bustling nature are divided by speciality into distinct sections. The vibrant web of stalls is comparable to Aladdin’s cave, offering an eclectic mix of wares from leather goods and carpets to silver lanterns and embroidered slippers. Great bargains can be found in the souks and you must haggle hard for your goods. The great square of Jemaa el Fna has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. The square is in the centre of medina and attracts street performers, snake charmers, potion sellers and belly dancers alike, offering tourists an unrivalled cultural display.

Portugal’s Algarve region hosts a more traditional shopping experience. Loule is a pleasant inland town and its markets offer a glimpse into traditional Portuguese life as you can watch craftsmen, coppersmiths and basket makers at work while browsing their stalls for authentic bargains and fresh produce. Algarve tours will take you to the fishing port of Portimao in the Western Algarve, which hosts a more vibrant display of souvenirs and in-between the seafood restaurants and pleasant streets of the old town you will find plenty of shops to satisfy your needs. In the western Algarve the Aljezur market is a monthly attraction in which a troupe of gypsy’s enters the town to sell their wares. The locals insist that the best buys are cotton goods, footwear and pottery so haggle hard to bring home some bargains.
