The UK's Premium Holiday Report Guide

railer 300x225 Scotland England travelers switching to trainsTrain operators claim that many passengers are choosing to take the train instead of flying between England and Scotland.

The Atoc (Association of Train Operating Companies) stated that over the past 18 months the train market has raised in value given the fact that many people are taking the train over flight for simple transfers from Birmingham and London to Glasgow and Edinburgh.

While air travel is still the higher valued market, its share has started to drop over the past two years while the rail market continues to grow according to Atoc.

Take the trip from London to Glasgow where the rail share has increased up to 21% in June of 2010 from its previous 12% in 2008.

However, Atoc, stated that there seems to also be a long term move towards train travel with a large increase of passengers seen in particular along the West Coast Main Line after the £9bn upgrade of the line was completed by Virgin back in December of 2008.

Atoc also said that over the course of time between 2006 and 2009 rail journeys along the most popular air routes increased by about 31% while at the same time in the three year period air travel fell by about an average of 20%.

Over the course of 2009 the demand for rail services along the same ten major routes increased by about 17% resulting in almost one million additional sales.

Atoc representative, Edward Welsh, stated that there has been a large shift in the way people approach domestic travel and many people are choosing the rail system for environmental reasons.

Having travelled by train over the last two week-ends I am not surprised that trains to Scotland are becoming more popular as both our journeys were on time, quick and without any hassle. My only gripe would be about the costs of some of the journeys which are still too pricey especially if not booked well in advance.

    A good article Alan.
