First stop Old Town as the Swedes like to call it or as the world knows it – Gamla Stan. This area is the best preserved area in all of Stockholm and will return you in time to cobblestone streets, alleyways, buildings dating to the 15th century and you can see all the rich culture that is there as well as the functional and sturdiness of the Swedish architecture that will marvel you.
There are restaurants in Gamla Stan that serve fine delicacies as well as shops that have wonderful handicrafts that give you an opportunity to take a piece of Sweden back home with you. The Royal Cathedral is a must see on the list while in the area.
The oldest palace still occupied by its present ruler is the Royal Palace and is also in Gamla Stan. You can tour the Palace and see and experience the life of the nobles as you walk through hallways and passageways that have been walked by kings and queens.
An event not to miss is the changing of the guard at the residence of the King of Sweden. It lasts for 40 minutes and 30,000 guards perform the changing and is the most watched event by tourists, and like it mentioned before, it is all for free.
